The theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2019 focuses on Deuteronomy 16:18-20, “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue…”, in relation to Indonesia, a nation with ethnic and religious diversity in much need of unity.
The Christians of Indonesia found these words incredibly poignant in light of their situation. Issues of economic injustice and the challenges associated with religious pluralism are highlighted within the materials for 2019.
Of Indonesia’s population, only 10% are Christian. Nevertheless, many Indonesians live by the principle gotong royong, meaning to live in “solidarity and by collaboration” with their neighbours. Unfortunately, this is not always true of contemporary Indonesian approaches to economics, which can be open to corruption by businesses and the government, and often negatively impact on the environment. Many of Indonesia’s inhabitants face poverty as a result of this lack of justice and the failure of the strong to protect the weak.
